The Florida minimum wage will be formally raised to $15 per hour after 30 September, with a corresponding adjustment of $11.98 for tip workers. This was the last step of the "Amendment 2" amendment approved by the voters in 2020. The amendment initially raised the minimum wage from the current standard by US$ 9 to US$ 8.65, to US$ 10 in September 2021, and then increased by US$ 1 every year from 30 September to US$ 15 this time. Several media reports confirm that the increase in the state minimum wage will exceed the federal minimum wage by twice (7.25 United States dollars, unchanged from 24 July 2009). Thereafter, annual minimum wage adjustments in Florida will be linked to inflation.
Businesses in tourist towns off the coast of Florida have been restructured ahead of schedule. Numerous local media have mentioned that catering and retail businesses in India, such as Indian Rocks Beach, are recalculating human costs, and some employers have indicated that rising wages have helped to retain cross-state commuters from neighbouring states, such as Alabama. Groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce had previously opposed the amendment, arguing that it would force small businesses to shut down, but had failed to prevent voters from voting.
The Nebraska minimum wage was set at $15.26 in 2027, but this figure is 29 cents less than the adjustment previously approved by the electorate. At the heart of the controversy was the adoption of local regulations in the cities of Omaha and Lincoln, which sought to revive the adjustment programme originally approved by the voters and to eliminate lower wages for young people.
Mike Hilgers, Attorney General of Nebraska, filed a lawsuit claiming that the minimum wage policy was a state-wide matter and should not be left to the municipalities to decide. The Lancaster County Judge blocked the Lincoln City Ordinance before it came into force, while the Omaha Ordinance proceedings are still pending, with effect from 1 October. For employers, it is imperative that pay systems and salary notices be prepared and posted by 1 January, unless the court decides otherwise on local rules.
The minimum wage in Maine, which will be increased as of 1 January next year, has not yet been specified. The Wisconsin minimum wage remained at the federal standard of $7.25, but reports explored the feasibility of raising the local minimum wage to $20, giving rise to a debate as to whether it would "reverse" the workers it was intended to help. Edgewater, Colorado, is considering slowing down the growth of the petty minimum wage.
At the federal level, on 16 September, Amazon announced an increase of $1 to $20 per hour for the start-up pay of eligible core United States operational positions, with an average hourly salary of nearly $24 per full-time position, with a total pay of over $32, inclusive of benefits. It indicated that the initial salary had increased by more than 17 per cent over the past three years. On the New York City side, Mayor Mayor Mamdani obtained a record $131.5 million from DoorDash in respect of the rights of expatriate distribution workers. An increase in the minimum wage has also been announced in a medical system in Connecticut, affecting thousands of employees.
The increase in the minimum wage to $15 represents two levels of impact for those in the States of Florida who are engaged in catering, retailing, hotels, etc.: The first is that if you are currently receiving the state minimum wage, the real income will increase; the second is that the employer may adjust the working structure, for example by reducing the working hours or increasing the basic wage ratio of the tips. It is recommended that affected persons reconcile their payroll to confirm whether salaries after 30 September (or 1 October) have been paid in accordance with the new standards.
For Chinese enterprises operating in Nebraska, close attention needs to be paid to the progress of the Omaha and Lincoln proceedings. In the event that local regulations finally come into force, the local minimum wage rules may differ from state standards and it is essential that the pay system update and payroll notices be posted by 1 January. If the proceedings continue to obstruct local regulations, they can be executed at the state standard of $15.26.
