The Sony Group confirmed that it would not participate in the International Consumer Electronics Fair (CES), held in Las Vegas in January 2027. This will be the first time that Sony has been absent since his first CES in 1967, ending a 60-year history of continuous participation. Sony has reported that "we assess activities and modes of communication in a sustained and strategic manner according to the needs and priorities of multiple businesses", and that Sony and his affiliates plan not to exhibit any products in their January activities.
This news was first reported by the media and subsequently confirmed by several media outlets.
The source of Sony and CES dates back to 1967. For many years, Sony ' s press conference has been a landmark link in CES. In recent years, however, participation has changed:
CES 2027: Sony officially confirmed withdrawal.
Sony ' s withdrawal from CES was not an isolated event, but the latest step in its continued withdrawal from the consumption of electronic hardware in recent years.
Sale of television operations: Sony has transferred 51 per cent of its holdings in television operations to the Chinese manufacturer TCL at a price of approximately $473 million. The transaction meant that, from April 2027, Sony ' s entire family entertainment business would become a holding subsidiary of the Shenzhen listing company, TCL. Sony voluntarily sought the deal. After the transaction was completed, the Bravia brand logo was retained, but the controlling shareholders became Chinese enterprises.
Shrink in other consumer electronics: Sony has handed over operating rights to TCL for television operations, while gradually retreating from other consumer electronics. However, Sony continues to produce games equipment, and its PlayStation department is expanding to the area of peripheral accessories such as monitors, headphones and soundboxes.
Focusing on entertainment content: Sony made it clear in his statement that the company is focusing more on entertainment — including games, animation, films and music — as well as its intellectual property rights and technology to support creators. Sony has acquired a media platform, Crunchyolll, and has increased investment in emerging entertainment items such as animation.
Sony's transformation is financially supported. According to Sony's published data:
Sony stated that the game business had benefited from weak yen and United States customs refunds, while ensuring the necessary supply of memory chips, easing market concerns about PlayStation 5 capacity.
Television consumers: Effective April 2027, the actual control of Bravia television became TCL. The products purchased by consumers will remain the Sony brand logo, but the stock structure behind them has changed fundamentally. Sony's flagship products in recent years have abandoned OLED technology and moved to the Mini-LED system, known as "True RGB", with a flagship aircraft of about 4000 Nit.
Game player: Sony will continue to produce game equipment and PlayStation is one of its core pillars. Even the future release of PlayStation 6 will not be published on CES. Sony ' s expansion in the area of peripheral accessories means that there may be more official parts available to players.
Video and Animated Audience: Spider-Man: Beyond Spider-Man, produced by Sony Film, has confirmed that it will be shown on the American yard line on 18 June 2027, the final chapter of the current Spider-Man trilogy. Sony ' s continued input in the fields of animation, film and music means that its content output will remain active.
Investors: Sony is transitioning from hardware to entertainment and content companies, where stock price performance will be more relevant to games, streaming media, video and ticket rooms. In March and July 2027, the options market has seen many increases and declines, reflecting the market ' s interest in the prospects for Sony ' s transition.
Sony's withdrawal could have an impact on the overall e-exposition pattern. As one of the most representative exhibitors of CES, Sony ' s departure marked a further shift in the focus of the consumer electronic fair from traditional hardware to content and software ecology.
The Sony side has yet to pronounce itself on whether to return to CES after 2027. It is now certain that Sony has placed "recreation and intellectual property" on "consumer e-demonstration", a strategic orientation that will not change in the foreseeable future.
