Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1 Reaches Pixel With One Fix and No New Features
Google began rolling out Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1 to Pixel devices on October 16, 2026, a week after Beta 7. It is a point release on the second Quarterly Platform Release (QPR2) beta track for Android 17, which makes it a maintenance build rather than a feature drop.
Release notes compiled by Droid Life list build CP41.260831.019, security patch level 2026-10-05, Google Play services 26.28.33 and emulator support for x86 (64-bit) and ARM (v8-A). Unlike Beta 7, which pushed the patch level forward, this build carries the same October 5 patch.
The only entry under fixes is "severe UI stuttering and multi-second freezes under memory pressure from heavy page-reclaim thrashing and major page faults," tracked as Issue #571186734. Android Authority called it "one big fix." Droid Life and The Daily Tech Feed both state that no other new features or changes were included. Google's community engagement manager, Mishaal Rahman, posted the same wording on social media, and Android Headlines and Android Police relayed it.
Page-reclaim thrashing happens when the kernel keeps scanning and reclaiming memory pages without freeing enough, burning processor time; major page faults then force the processor to stop and pull data back from storage. Together they produce dropped frames and taps that take seconds to register. Android Authority reports the underlying performance problem first appeared in QPR1 and survived into the QPR2 betas.
Beta 7.1 also lists one known issue: Pixel 11 Pro Fold owners may have to re-enroll Face Unlock for it to work properly. Digitbin notes the same problem shipped with Beta 7 and is not resolved here. The Eastern Herald points out that release notes are not a clean bill of health for every supported handset.
Eligible hardware runs from the Pixel 6a through the Pixel 11 Pro Fold: the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro and 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a, the entire Pixel 9 line, the Pixel 10 family including the 10a and 10 Pro Fold, and all four Pixel 11 models — 23 devices by Jetstream's and Digitbin's count, plus the Android Emulator for developers. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are not on the list.
Android Police notes that newer phones may not feel the performance hit at all, while the freeze bug landed hardest on devices like the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7. That is a large part of why the QPR2 track still matters.
The previous build, Beta 7, arrived on October 9 as CP41.260831.016 and fixed two things: Flip to Shh preventing deep sleep and draining the battery, and HTTPS downloads failing immediately through DownloadManager, tracked as issues #560036427 and #569079944. One point release fixed power, the next fixes responsiveness.
Multiple outlets, including NokiaPowerUser and Skalablog, expect the stable Android 17 QPR2 release in December 2026. AndroidSage cautions that testers who want to land on that stable build must opt out before installing QPR3 Beta 1, which started on October 2, or face a mandatory factory reset.
For most users the simplest path is waiting for the December stable release. Anyone hit by the freezes can join the Android Beta Program for the over-the-air build or flash the official system images, a route that requires unlocking the bootloader and wipes all data. 9to5Google adds that testers on Beta 6 who did not want to try QPR3 still received Beta 7 through an on-device update.
