The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday, Oct. 21, that Toyota is recalling 105,794 vehicles in the US over a potential fuel leak that could raise the risk of fire if it reaches an ignition source. The recall covers certain 2024-2027 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid vehicles. The figure counts potentially affected vehicles rather than confirmed faulty connections, and Toyota says it cannot estimate how many vehicles have the problem.
The defect sits at the fuel tube connection near the fuel tank, which joins a resin fuel tube to a metal line supplying the engine. A retaining clip holds the two tubes together. Toyota said the tubes could pull apart if the clip lifts, allowing fuel to escape until the hybrid system shuts off the engine. The company has not established what might cause the clip to lift. A fuel leak that meets an ignition source can make a fire more likely.
Dealers will inspect the fuel tube connection and install a supplemental clamp. If needed, they will also replace the resin fuel tube before fitting the clamp. The work is free. Toyota's notice is dated Oct. 14, and the list of affected vehicles is current as of the filing date and could change. Owners can check whether their SUV is included by entering their VIN or license plate at Toyota.com/recall or NHTSA.gov/recalls. Owners with questions can contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331.
Toyota's timing follows a regulatory rule. Under 49 CFR 577.7, a manufacturer must send owner notices no later than 60 days after it files its defect report with NHTSA. Toyota's release is dated Oct. 14, and 60 days from Oct. 14 is Dec. 13, so "by mid-December" uses nearly all of that time.
Toyota is also recalling 30,978 model-year 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles because the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU) may not complete its motor initialization process correctly, which can cause the plug-in-hybrid system to reduce power or shut down at higher speeds. The campaign was filed with NHTSA as recall number 26V659000 and internally coded by Toyota as 26TA22. It covers vehicles built for the US market from July 22, 2025 through Aug. 19, 2026. Dealers will update the ECU software at no cost. Owners are not due their letters until Nov. 22 at the earliest.
The two recalls involve different failure mechanisms: a mechanical connection issue on the Land Cruiser Hybrid and a software initialization issue on the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. Neither recall involves reported injuries. Land Cruiser owners can check their VIN ahead of the December letters; RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid owners will be notified on the stated schedule to have the software updated.
