Football Manager 27 Goes Free for Five Days Ahead of Launch, SEGA Bets on "Try Before You Buy"
Sports Interactive and publisher SEGA announced on October 21 that Football Manager 27 will open a free play window ahead of its full release: from October 29 to November 3, PC and Mac players can download and play the Launch Preview at no cost via Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The window runs five days, with all game modes available and no sign-up required.
Unlike past pre-release betas gated behind pre-purchase, this Launch Preview is described as "much closer to the finished game," with a host of new features. Saves started during the free period carry over into both the paid Launch Preview and the full launch, so players won't have to start over. Sports Interactive has described offering an annual title free-to-play with all modes available as an industry first.
Football Manager 27 fully launches on November 10 at $59.99 (£49.99). Players who pre-purchase between November 3 and November 10 get a 10% discount. Once the free window closes, the Launch Preview becomes paid content for pre-order customers until the full release.
Last year's Football Manager 26 drew heavy criticism for feeling "incomplete" and sporting a "mobile-esque UI," denting the series' reputation. Sports Interactive announced the free play on social media, which media read as a show of confidence in this year's course correction—letting the whole community try before buying to confirm the problems are fixed. TheGamer called the five days both a "grace period" and a gamble: if FM27 still feels like a "terrible, unfinished mess," the free window could just warn off would-be buyers.
The beneficiaries include all PC and Mac players plus Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, who get access through their subscription. Non-subscribers can download free on Steam, Epic or the Microsoft Store. Console (PlayStation/Xbox) players are not included in this free window.
After November 3 the Launch Preview turns paid; the full game arrives November 10. Trial saves carry over across Steam, Epic, the Microsoft Store and Game Pass. Whether SEGA's move actually repairs the trust deficit left by FM26 will depend on how players experience the game.
