Musk Braces for War as Republicans Face Midterm Losses
On October 14, tech journalist Kara Swisher warned on The Bulwark podcast that if Republicans lose Congress, Musk could face renewed investigations into his businesses. She alleged that DOGE had halted "like a half a dozen investigations" into his companies. Musk replied on X with just two words: "Message received." He then reposted a Politico story about Democrats' plans to investigate him, writing: "Live by the sword, die by the sword. Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets."
According to a New York Times analysis of FEC filings, Musk has spent $366 million on pro-GOP midterm efforts, with at least $276 million flowing to Republican groups and his America PAC since July. The BBC reported that Musk donated upwards of $200 million in the quarter ending September 30. The Los Angeles Times called Musk the biggest known donor of the cycle. Wired reported that America PAC spent $76.7 million in Q3 2026, including $35.8 million on a field operation across all seven Senate battleground states. Musk also gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, accounting for 58% of that super PAC's September fundraising. Salon noted the $366 million total exceeds the roughly $290 million he spent helping Trump in 2024 by about $76 million.
The Los Angeles Times noted that the GOP's financial advantage has been a rare bright spot amid deep voter frustration over the president's performance, stubbornly high prices and the unpopular war with Iran. On a Mother Jones podcast, host Garrison commented that big money is the one lifeline Republicans have right now, and Musk's $366 million ranks among the largest individual donations in American political history. Daily Kos, citing Axios, reported that Musk's team reached out to Republicans in late August to discuss a rescue mission for Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, funded substantially by Musk's September giving.
Politico reported that senior Democrats are weighing how different panels can target Musk and his businesses. The Washington Post noted potential probes could cover his DOGE role, SpaceX and Tesla's multibillion-dollar federal contracts and subsidies, and allegations he slowed military-grade Starlink assets to Ukraine. Sara Guerrero, spokesperson for Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said there are "a lot of questions" about Musk's DOGE role and "it is something we plan to investigate." Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) said Musk should be investigated as part of corruption probes into the Trump administration "because it takes two to tango."
The Washington Post reported on October 23 that despite the midterms being more than a week away, Musk continues signaling a counteroffensive. In a 2024 interview with Tucker Carlson, Musk joked: "If he loses, I'm f---ed" and "How long do you think my prison sentence is going to be?" Forbes reported Musk's X post warning Democrats he would come for "those pulling the strings." HuffPost noted Musk shared an article titled "Capitol Agenda: Dem Gavels Are Coming for Elon Musk" when issuing that threat.
Election Day is November 3. If Democrats take either chamber, investigations are likely to follow; if Republicans hold, scrutiny of Musk's spending and DOGE legacy may still occur but at a lower intensity. Whether Musk's threats materialize and whether Democratic probes advance both depend on the election outcome and the resulting congressional makeup.
