FBI Searches Beverly Hills Mansion in Expanding Swalwell Probe
FBI agents executed a federal search warrant at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at a mansion on Roxbury Drive near Benedict Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills, California. The Associated Press, CNN and the Los Angeles Times, citing people familiar with the investigation, reported that the operation is connected to the investigation of former Rep. Eric Swalwell. The FBI's Los Angeles field office confirmed agents were "executing a federal search warrant" at the property but said the affidavit remains sealed.
Multiple outlets reported the mansion is listed on California business filings of Stephen Cloobeck, the billionaire founder of Diamond Resorts International and formerly one of Swalwell's biggest political backers. The AP reported that Swalwell spent time at the home before resigning from office in April. Cloobeck told the New York Post in April that he had cut ties with Swalwell as allegations mounted, saying he was no longer associated with him and supported women's rights.
FBI spokesperson Lourdes Arocho said: "Early this morning the FBI conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation. We have no further comment." POLITICO reported that no arrests were planned and the warrant affidavit stays sealed. Authorities have not said what agents sought, whether anything was seized, or whether anyone was detained. CNN said it had contacted a lawyer for Swalwell for comment.
Tuesday's search is the latest visible escalation. On August 15, 2026, federal agents seized an iPhone and a MacBook Pro from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and searched his Washington, D.C., home the next day, according to court-filing reporting. Swalwell, 45, served 13 years in Congress from 2013 to 2026. He dropped his California governor bid and resigned from the House in April after CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle detailed sexual misconduct allegations. He denies the allegations.
Cloobeck, himself a one-time gubernatorial candidate, dropped his own bid and spent more than $1 million backing Swalwell's run for governor, POLITICO reported. The New York Post, via follow-on reporting, put the support at more than $1 million, including a $39,200 maximum direct contribution and a private $31,000 trip to France in 2024, and said Swalwell stayed at the mansion before Cloobeck evicted him. No official statement has linked these financial ties to the substance of the search.
A parallel local track is also moving. NBC News reported on October 16 that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's victims unit investigated a case and forwarded it to the District Attorney's sex crimes unit on September 21, which is weighing whether to bring charges. At least four to five women, including one former staffer, have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct or rape, including alleged incidents in 2018, 2019 and 2024; he denies them all. What comes next turns on whether the sealed affidavit is unsealed and whether county or federal prosecutors file charges.
