Former Luxury Brokers Get 30 Years Each in Sex-Trafficking Case
Three brothers who once ranked among the most visible figures in luxury real estate were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on Tuesday in Manhattan. Twins Oren Alexander and Alon Alexander, 39, and their older brother Tal Alexander, 40, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni after their conviction in March. The hearing lasted about seven hours, with the brothers appearing in tan jail uniforms. Eleven accusers addressed the court before the sentences were announced. The brothers pleaded not guilty and continue to maintain their innocence.
The government and the defense offered sharply different accounts of the appropriate punishment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Espinosa described repeated drugging and rape over many years as callous, careless and cruel, and urged life sentences, saying every victim would carry pain for life. Defense lawyers asked for the 15-year mandatory minimum, calling 15 years already an extraordinary punishment. Caproni told the men their conduct was monstrous, but declined to impose life terms, saying a life sentence would be draconian and that she did not believe the men were beyond redemption. The 30-year terms fall between the two requests.
Prosecutors said the brothers used wealth, celebrity connections and access to luxury properties to attract women with nightclub invitations, parties, and all-expenses-paid trips to the Hamptons, Aspen and the Caribbean, then drugged and sexually assaulted them, sometimes with multiple men involved. Prosecutors said at least 70 women were raped or sexually assaulted. The conduct spanned more than a decade, with assaults described as early as 2001. One woman said she was raped by Tal Alexander in August 2014, describing every second in that shower as an eternity of terror and saying the attack changed how she approached relationships.
Before their arrests, Oren and Tal Alexander were stars at Douglas Elliman, known as the A Team for ultra-high-end sales and celebrity clients. They brokered major deals including a nearly 240 million dollar penthouse sale in 2019 that was then the most expensive residential sale in U.S. history, and later co-founded the brokerage Official in 2022. Alon Alexander ran the family's private security company. The brothers projected a life of yachts, private jets and waterfront mansions in Miami. They were arrested in Florida on December 11, 2024, and have been held without bail since then.
What comes next centers on appeals and compensation. Defense lawyers said the March verdict had not changed their view of the evidence and pointed to the 15-year minimum as sufficient, signaling likely challenges to the convictions and sentences. Restitution for victims remains to be finalized. For the industry, the case raises questions about power imbalances between high-end brokers and clients, and about social events tied to property sales in New York and Miami. One accuser told the court she carries a quiet funeral for the person she might have become, a line that captured why prosecutors said the harm will last far beyond the prison terms.
