Amazon Bets Big on the Wall With Echo Show 16 and Alexa Photo Frame
Amazon on October 28 unveiled the Echo Show 16, a 16-inch full-HD smart display that combines Alexa+, Fire TV and a customizable home dashboard in one device. Amazon says it offers 10% more viewing area than the Echo Show 15 with colors twice as vibrant, wrapped in an anodized aluminum frame nearly 40% thinner than its predecessor. A wall mount is included, with optional stands sold separately.
The company's pitch is that the Show 16 is a central home hub rather than just a kitchen timer. Fire TV is built in, and the box ships with a remote, so viewers can stream services including Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube and Prime Video without relying on touch or voice. Customizable dashboards and tools such as Family Organizer extend the device into shared household scheduling and smart-home control.
The new display carries a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera with night-vision support, described as offering the widest field of view of any Echo Show yet. Its upgraded Visual ID can detect faces from up to 17 feet away, letting Alexa+ personalize answers while guarding access to email or calendar details. A hardware key disables the microphone and camera for privacy. Sound comes from a ten-driver system, eight woofers plus two tweeters, that tunes itself to the room.
Alongside the big screen, Amazon introduced its first digital picture frame, the Alexa Photo Frame. It uses a 10-inch semi-matte anti-glare touchscreen and comes in black plastic or real birch and walnut wood finishes. The frame syncs with Amazon Photos, which offers unlimited storage to Prime members, and Alexa+ automatically surfaces pictures by person, date and sentiment. Users can pick featured people, call up specific pictures by voice, and attach voice notes to photos. Unlike an Echo Show, it shows only photos and never serves ads.
The Echo Show 16 costs $499.99 with a standard display and $569.99 with the anti-glare Nanomatte finish, with a $100 preorder discount. An optional stand costs about $70, or about $125 for a swivel-and-tilt version, and the device ships later this year. The Alexa Photo Frame is on sale now at $199.99 in black and $229 in birch or walnut. Each frame includes 90 days of Alexa+; after that, Alexa+ features require a Prime subscription. Alexa+ is free for Prime members and otherwise costs $20 per month.
The lineup shows Amazon pushing its hardware upmarket while tying it closer to Prime and Amazon Photos. For households already storing pictures in Amazon Photos, the frame is an easy gift pick. The harder sell is the $500-plus Show 16, which approaches $700 with the anti-glare screen and stand. What comes next is the holiday shipping window and whether Alexa+ personalization proves useful enough to justify the premium.
