Samsung Taunts Apple Over iPhone Duo Cracks: "Years Ahead in Foldables"
Samsung's Canadian account posted three ad images on Instagram this week, each showing a bright line running across the exact spot on the fold where some iPhone Duo units have cracked. The three taglines read: "Folding is nothing new to us," "Folding. We know a thing or eight," and "Switch to Galaxy Z Fold 8." According to MobileSyrup, Samsung also rolled out mobile billboards carrying the same cracked-display imagery in Toronto and Vancouver, alongside TikTok spots and even text-message pushes.
It is Samsung's second strike within a week. An earlier sponsored Instagram video shows a green apple being sliced in half, the two halves clumsily trying to fold together, before the Galaxy Z Fold 8 sweeps in with a spec comparison and the closing line: "Years ahead in Foldables." Both Android Authority and MacObserver describe the spot as a no-holds-barred jab at Apple's first foldable, following Samsung's earlier "Welcome to Foldables" teaser campaign from September.
The ad's headline numbers: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 measures 9.7mm folded and weighs 201g, against the iPhone Duo's 11.3mm and 254g — 1.6mm thinner and 53g lighter, figures Gizmochina confirms match the official spec sheets. GSMArena adds a pricing sting: the iPhone Duo starts at $2,000 for the 256GB model, while the Z Fold 8, with a $200 discount applied, ends up $300 cheaper overall. The cover displays are 5.5 inches versus 5.4 inches, both inner screens are 7.6 inches, and the batteries are 4,800mAh versus 4,883mAh — a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 against Apple's A20 Pro, so endurance comes down to chip efficiency.
Samsung can only make the joke because Apple really did stumble. Within days of launch, several owners posted photos of inner screens cracked along the hinge, most showing a line of bright pixels across one side. One owner quoted by The Verge said the phone was about six hours old with fewer than 20 opens when an audible crack sounded during unfolding. iFixit, cited by the Los Angeles Times, believes a failing hinge component is punching up into the screen rather than the panel itself being faulty. Apple told 9to5Mac and CNBC it is "aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units" and that affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement. There is no full replacement program yet, and some owners have already dubbed the affair "crackgate."
A Samsung spokesperson called the campaign a "playful new campaign" tapping into "the growing rivalry in foldables and how experience plays in the category," as quoted by MacRumors. The experience claim is real: Samsung has built foldables since the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, making the Z Fold 8 its eighth-generation effort. For shoppers, the near-term effect is price — Samsung's discount drags the entry cost of a book-style foldable $300 below Apple's. For Apple, the next test is proving the hinge failures are a small-batch defect and not a design flaw; if the "crackgate" label sticks, its first foldable starts life with a reputational dent.
