Sony Pushes Back-to-Back PS5 Updates as Jailbreak Race Reaches GTA 6 Countdown
Sony released PS5 system software 26.07-14.20.00 on October 21 at about 1.2 GB, then followed with 26.07-14.22.00 around November 1, only 11 days later. The second update's notes explicitly mention security fixes, a sharp contrast with the cosmetic description of its predecessor.
The official changelog for 14.20 lists a single item: improved messages and usability on some screens. Version 14.22 instead cites security fixes to system software, without naming any vulnerability or component. Sony rarely acknowledges jailbreaks by name; it simply closes holes quietly.
The public Relapse jailbreak supports consoles up to firmware 13.60. Sony patched its vulnerabilities in 14.00 in mid-September, then shipped 14.10 on October 1. Researcher Gezine later posted a short video showing debug settings open on 14.10 with the caption "Hello 14.10." Within hours of 14.20's release, researchers reported a fresh code-execution entry point using a Remote Lua Loader to run payloads and start an FTP server. These demonstrations remain private, with no fully working public release confirmed.
Since mid-October, modified consoles have been required to install 14.10 to reconnect to PSN, which wipes out the jailbreak and its hypervisor bypass with no way to downgrade. The same jailbreaks that enable perks such as booting PS2 discs force owners to give up online play, store access, and new patches.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced and pre-download expected around November 12. According to PlayStation Game Size, which monitors the PlayStation Store database, the game now requires system software 14.22.00.00 or newer, up from the 14.10.00.00 minimum reported in early October. Anyone holding an older firmware for homebrew must choose between the jailbreak and the biggest launch of the year.
Expect Sony to keep patching through launch day to protect against piracy and early emulation, while private exploit holders decide whether to publish before or after release. For ordinary players the advice is simple: update normally. For firmware-holders, the gamble is whether a public release ever arrives. Sony's latest PS5 firmware sets up a direct clash with the jailbreak scene days before GTA 6 arrives. Would you update immediately to play at launch, or stay on old firmware in hopes of a public jailbreak?
