Atari and developers Nightdive Studios and Eidos Montreal have announced that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will launch on December 3. The remaster is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG. It revives the 1998 stealth game using Nightdive’s KEX Engine and includes content from the 1999 Thief: Gold release.
Gematsu reported on November 2 that the game will launch on December 3 across the listed consoles and PC storefronts. Publisher Atari and developers Nightdive Studios and Eidos Montreal have opened preorders. Physical editions will be available for PS5 and Switch 2 only, published by Clear River Games.
The release brings the original stealth title to current and previous-generation platforms. The game’s return is aimed at players familiar with the original as well as audiences who may not have played the 1998 release.
Thief: The Dark Project helped establish a style of first-person stealth built around light and sound. Players control Garrett, a thief who relies on shadows, quiet movement and careful timing to avoid detection. Rather than emphasizing direct combat, the game asks players to understand how enemies hear and see movement.
Nightdive says the remaster retains the original mission design while updating graphics and interface elements. The KEX Engine is being used to improve textures, models and animations, while the underlying stealth mechanics remain recognizable.
Gematsu reported that the remaster includes the original Thief: The Dark Project campaign, which contains 12 missions, along with the additional content from Thief: Gold. The Gold update added three missions and five types of enemies.
The official store pages list a new four-mission campaign called The Tarnished Mirror. The expansion is being developed by the team behind The Black Parade, a major fan-made campaign. The new story is intended to connect the events of Thief: The Dark Project with Thief 2: The Metal Age.
The remaster uses Nightdive’s KEX Engine and includes updated textures, models and animations. Gematsu reported support for resolutions up to 4K and frame rates up to 120 frames per second. Modern controller support adds a weapon and item wheel, rumble and motion or gyro controls.
A mission selector will allow players to replay completed missions. The game will also support custom campaigns, allowing players to access additional content created by the community.
Gematsu reported a standard edition price of $29.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition price of $34.99. The deluxe version includes the game, additional artwork-related material, the soundtrack and a preview of a Thief novel. Prices may differ by region and storefront.
The December 3 date is confirmed by the publisher and developers. Performance on each platform and the quality of the new campaign will be clearer after the game is released and reviewed. For now, the announcement establishes the release schedule, platform list and main additions included in the remaster.
