Sony Interactive Entertainment reported that Marvel’s Wolverine had sold 2.4 million copies worldwide as of Nov. 4, about 50 days after its Sept. 15 launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The figure comes from Sony’s second-quarter fiscal 2026 results and represents sell-through to consumers, rather than shipments to retailers. Sony also said cumulative PS5 shipments reached 97.9 million units worldwide, leaving the console about 2.1 million units short of the 100-million mark.
2.4 million copies in 50 days
Marvel’s Wolverine was developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and released worldwide on Sept. 15 exclusively for PS5. Sony’s financial materials show that the game had sold 2.4 million copies by Nov. 4. It performed strongly in U.S. and U.K. physical-sales charts after launch, but its 50-day total remains below some of Sony’s largest first-party releases. Different games have different launch windows, platform reach and marketing budgets, so one sales figure alone does not establish whether a title is a success or a failure.
PS5 hardware shipments decline
Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles from July through September, down from 4 million in the same quarter a year earlier, a decline of about 35%. At the same time, combined PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 88.2 million units, up 7.9 million year over year. First-party software sales rose to 8.2 million units. PlayStation Network had 127 million monthly active users, showing that the platform’s software and services business continued to grow. Cumulative PS5 shipments reached 97.9 million.
Memory costs put pressure on console margins
Sony said demand from AI data centers has pushed up memory-chip prices, creating cost pressure for gaming hardware. The company has used promotional adjustments, pricing and other cost controls to offset some of the increase. It also said it had aligned with suppliers on the memory quantities needed for projected hardware sales in the next fiscal year. Software and network services continue to support the gaming segment, while hardware sales are moving into the later stage of the PS5 product cycle.
What the sales figure says about the games business
Wolverine’s 2.4 million sales show that a major superhero title can attract substantial demand on PS5, but they also highlight the need to evaluate development spending and commercial returns carefully. Sony has not disclosed the game’s development budget, marketing costs or profit, so sales alone cannot establish its profitability. Its longer-term performance will depend on the sales curve, discounts, holiday demand and player engagement.
